What I Learned from Minimalism (Netflix Documentary)

Updated: Sep 13, 2021

1. Western civilization is the wealthiest it’s ever been, but people are still not happy. Humans are wired to tire of old things and crave new things. Too much stuff can overwhelm the senses.

2. The American Dream is about the opportunity and that working hard can lead to success. The problem is a success is being measured by material goods.

3. In our houses, people are looking to fill the space they got instead of creating the space that fits our lives. Downsizing is practical and helps families become more social with each other because they are close in proximity.

4. Keep the stuff that brings value to your life. The example the movie gave was books. This person loved books: the smell and feel of the pages and their loaning to friends. Books brought this person joy, and this is the goal of minimalism.

5. We look to stuff to define the outward projection of our personality. We care about status and the symbolic meaning of materials instead of the quality of the material.

6. When traveling, try to fill everything in one carry-on bag. Project 33 for clothes helps limit the number of outfits and keeps you from hoarding your clothes.

7. There is a threshold to money that can buy happiness. Money can get you out of poverty, making you happy, but the opposite can happen when you have too much. Monetary success can trap in your job.

8. Turn off the tech temporarily and meditate or collect thoughts in your quiet. It helps control your worry and determine what is rational worrying and what is irrational worrying.

9. Advertising to children is becoming dangerous because of the increased amount with the rise of the internet. The advertisements contribute to the need for more mindset. Parents are limiting the number of toys children can have and figure out how to appreciate what they have.

What does this mean for design?

Designs for homes and offices can go in two different directions concerning minimalism. It can follow minimalism with an increase of white/empty space in designs, or it can do the opposite, and designs can be cluttered and filled to the brim. Designs following minimal minimalism will give a well-organized, consistent vibe. Going the opposite direction will differentiate you and bring uniqueness to other designs competing for the same space.
