Should I Use a Free Logo Generator for My Logo?

Updated: Sep 13, 2021

As a logo designer myself, you might think my answer be a hard no to free logo design websites, but my answer is actually maybe. There are a few crucial factors influencing your decision to use a free website or a formal designer.

1. Know Your Brand

Know what your client wants to feel when they see your logo. Do you want them to feel unique or familiar? If you use a free logo creator, you risk running into basic images that usually favor the literal side. These graphics could be useful or disastrous, depending on what you are selling. For example, if your company is opening a temporary non-profit selling water bottles, all you may need is a waterdrop graphic readily available on a free logo website. On the other hand, if your water bottle company is its own entity, it competes with other popular water bottle companies such as Dasani, Ice Mountain, and Absopure. At this point, you would want to hire a professional who does research and can come up with a logo that stands out from the crowd and helps you establish your brand.

2. Time and Skill

Everyone knows the cliché "time is money," but no one understands this better than business owners. Time management is tricky. Depending on what industry you are in and your lifestyle, you could have a hard time fitting in time to design. Most logo generators are relatively simple drag and drop or plug and chug. Designing takes at least a half-hour of your time if you already have something in mind. Suppose you are exploring what is available in fonts and images that can take even longer. Logo creation interferes with your time working on running your business smoothly. You could do it after business hours, but people usually need that time to rest and/or take care of their families. Besides, you need to have the necessary design skills. You need to have an idea of the seven principles of design: balance, contrast, emphasis, pattern, unity, movement, rhythm. Most people have learned about these in grade school, but you may run into a communication problem if you are unaware of these principles. Consider a designer if your time is finite or your skill is not up to your quality standards; otherwise, use a logo generator and show off your skills.

3. Marketing Budget

Business owners also know the reverse of the "time is money" cliché: "money takes time." How much are you willing to spend on a logo? Maybe your priorities are still on your product or service, so you keep your marketing budget small. You may use a free logo generator to save money so that the rest of the marketing budget can go to things like a website, social media ads, or printed materials. Having a tight budget makes the other two points mentioned above more critical. If the logo generators' outcome turns out unsatisfactory, some designers emerging into the workforce are usually willing to intern for free or minimum wage. They at least have the frame of mind to think about branding all the time and will guarantee basic knowledge of design whether they went to a formal institution or are self-taught.
