Print vs. Digital: Why do my colors look different?

Updated: Sep 13, 2021

I am going to keep this short and simple for clients. I am not going into a deep dive into the optical sciences because it may be too confusing and is additional information not needed to design.

For any print-based projects, your designer is working in CMYK mode. CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (K). These colors are used for printers using the four-color printing process. They will look muted on the computer, so if the designer sends you the project and the colors don't look as vibrant as you hoped, don't worry when printed out, the colors will appear cleaner and more precise.

For any digital projects, your designer is working in RGB mode. RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue. These colors are used in websites, tv, and any other digital display designs. The colors should be exact here, but some color combinations impede digital projects' legibility versus their printing project counterparts. For example, designs with red backgrounds and black text.
