Are Trends Important When You Have a Strong Brand?

Updated: Sep 13, 2021

Designers and brand ambassadors like to think of our brands as timeless or evergreen and think trends are only relevant for a short time unimportant. This is partially true in that sometimes trends are short-lived, and you could get away with ignoring some, but let's take a look at the definition of trend. According to Merriam-Webster, trend means "a prevailing tendency or inclination towards a style or movement." With this definition in mind, yes, it is essential to pay attention to trend even with a strong brand, especially in advertising your brand. Trends tell us what is attractive to your audience and give us clues into what may help us relate to our audience on a personal level. Think of trends more as tools to help amplify your brand. For example, illustration became popular back in 2019 and since then has become useful for Airbnb. At the top of their home page (see above) is an illustration that gives them a relaxing, homey, adventurous vibe. That is the exact feeling they want to share with their audience. It also contrasts nicely with the photos making it easier for clients to find what they are looking for. In conclusion, trends are significant and are useful in helping keep your brand strong.
